I am one of the biggest fans of The Scottish Play eversince childhood. I must have watched every version, every movie and tv adaptation of it; I even made a list dedicated to those adaptations here on primewire. But this small budget movie with minimal sets remains to be the best version of the Shakespeares masterpiece imho. It is gothic, expressionistic and even dreamlike atmosphere is unmatched by any other. And Welles is the perfect Macbeth. Neither classical masters like Sir Ian McKellen or Sir Patrick Stweart, nor immensely talented young actors like Michael Fassbender come even close. Welles was born to play this part. It might be controversial opinion but I believe this is his best movie both as an actor and as a director, not Citizen Kane, not A Touch of Evil, not the Third Man… For me, this is the true masterpiece of Orson Welles.
