I watched the CAM copy of this film… for all interested this particular entry only has ONE intrusive, and very brief, advert, the rest is a decent film quality and the audio is only a bit muffled. The film itself relies heavily on the protagonist played by Elizabeth Moss to tell the story/backstory. It never really is explained, so a viewer must have some knowledge of the original story to watch this film, or you will be slightly lost. Elizabeth Moss is her usual dark eyed, under adorned, fear-filled and anxiety driven self. If you’ve seen her in “The Handmaid’s Tale” you will recognise the same technique. She is effective, to some extent, and did hold my attention for the most part. The overall story, though, is predictable and spotty. The suspense and the kills are predictable coordination. It is a watchable film, it just doesn’t add anything to the story by H.G. Wells. Wells’, which in and of itself is much more horrifying. Given Elizabeth Moss’ acting range, I felt disappointed. She was underutilised by poor direction and a predictably simplistic script. I would suggest anyone loving the premise read the novel. There are other adaptations, including the one with Kevin Bacon, which deviates even further, and is much more shocking (in many senses). I would definitely recommend a watch. It is time well spent, although it should have been much, much better.
